The ‚Schwabencenter‘ Heritage
The ‚Schwabencenter‘, being composed of a shopping mall plus three high rising apartment housing complexes, is situated in a very exposed location within the city of Augsburg. Since its opening in 1971, the ‘Schwabencenter’ has run through a profound transition of its image. About half a century later, it was chosen to develop new concepts for living and retail under one roof. The chair of human geography was involved into the project from its very start. The project is built on cooperation of the main actors, i.e. the center management, local architects, the Local Agenda 21 on sustainability, as well as the ‘Transition Town’ association. First results have been worked out together with MSc.-students in several courses in applied urban geography. The project is laid out as a creative and visionary workshop for the next years.
