Chair of Human Geography
and Resource Strategies

Prof. Dr. Matthias Schmidt

Humangeography at the University of Augsburg

The Chair for Human Geography’s teaching and research focuses on the diverse relationships and interactions between individuals, societies, environment and natural resources.

In teaching we strive to cover the wide range and diverse nature of human geography including aspects of social, population, cultural, economic and political geography, as well as geographies of rural and urban areas, transition and developing research.

In research we deal with management, use and perception of natural resources following a political ecology approach, as well as issues of vulnerability, resilience, migration and multi-local livelihoods in connection with multiple transformations in the Global South. Geographies of renewable energies, current issues of applied social, urban and economic geography, local and regional development as well as religion geography and cultural landscapes are further research foci.
