Abstract

Since October 1994, climatologists from Norwich, Bern, Würzburg, Thessaloniki, Barcelona, Lisbon, Copenhagen, Lund and Reykjavik have been working together on a project to reconstruct and provide synoptic interpretations of significant historical phases in the climate, as well as comparing their circulation dynamics with more recent developments. As a result of this future-orientated cooperation between experts from historical climatology and climate dynamics, a collective international research programme has been established with the financial support of the European Commission from 1996 to 1998.

Our research focuses on the Early Instrumental Period (EIP, 1780-1860) and the Late Maunder Minimum (LMM 1675-1715), with the Modern Instrumental Period (MIP 1915-1995) utilized as a more recent reference point. On the basis of improved and expanded datasets from Europe, researchers in Bern and Norwich have reconstructed gridded maps of mean monthly air pressure for the North Atlantic-European region that can be used as the basis for various forms of circulation analysis. The German contribution to the climate research project ADVICE will concentrate on the following key areas:
 

  • Contributions to the reconstruction of the European climate during the EIP and LMM as well as the evaluation of climatic variability in this century.
  • The following analyses of atmospheric circulation:-
  • Identification of months with anomalous circulation patterns in the period 1780-1860 (EIP)
  • Objective classification of the reconstructed air pressure fields on a monthly basis for the whole period 1780-1995 and on a daily basis for the selected anomalous months during the EIP.
  • Calculation of the important indices of circulation, and evaluation of the variability of circulation for the whole 216 year period.
  • Determination of significant circulation modes since 1780 and the comparison of modes of circulation between the EIP and MIP.
  • Establishment of the relations between atmospheric circulation and surface-level climate as well as comparisons of these relations between the EIP and MIP.
