Geographical Energy Research

Geographic research on energy at the University of Augsburg discusses and analyses the spatial structures and processes that result from the Energy Transition (Energiewende) in Germany and Europe. Based on these findings, ways of a spatial optimization of regenerative energy systems - in rural as well as urban space - are demonstrated. Geographic Information Systems play an essential role since they offer the opportunity of gaining system-analytic perspectives and of understanding the complexity of competing interests in land-use. Furthermore, methods of empiric social research are implied in order to characterise the numerous constellations of actors which lead to new forms of governance.
